You Made It Weird with Pete Holmes
My sister and I have a dream of a podcast called “Hello Sister” where we eventually get to broadcast our deep discussions of inspiration, metaphysical theories, and strategies for coping with life. We haven’t quite gotten there. We will one day – hopefully sooner than later. For now, the podcast that seems to be filling the gap is “You Made It Weird with Pete Holmes”.
When looking for entertainment while my other obsession True Crime Obsessed went on a two-week hiatus, I had happened upon this great collection of discussions with comedian Pete Holmes. In the past, I’ve appreciated Pete’s comedy specials and have included his HBO show “Crashing” in my regular rotation (although, admittedly I’ve fast forwarded through some of the too-awkward moments). I wouldn’t have called myself a fan, but I have enjoyed Pete’s work. So, when I saw that he had a podcast, I was open to giving it a listen and now – I’m a FAN!
Pete has wonderful discussions with both up-and-coming and established comedians, actors, and other influential or interesting individuals. They are beautiful open conversations about the person he is interviewing, and their thoughts on their lives, backgrounds, and sometimes swerving into deeper topics such as, “Why are we all here?” or “Is there an afterlife?”
On Spotify, there are 7 years of content, which makes “You Made It Weird” a great binge-worthy podcast with hours and hours of intriguing episodes. I’ve taken to listening to the latest episode and then jumping back in time, for instance listening to his first show with Kumail Nanjiani in October 2011, seven years before his Oscar nomination. Or with Jordan Peele in October 2013, when he discusses a script he’s been working on called “Get Out the House,” which now being a person of the future I know he wins an Oscar for in 2018 with a more concise title “Get Out.”
